In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whose blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Heavenly Father, You commit to us the swift and solemn trust of life: since we know not what a day may bring forth, but only that the hour for serving You is always present, may we wake to the instant claims of Your will upon our lives. In the face of questions without answers, of dreams unfulfilled, of the emptiness that will not go away, we are only compelled to thank You always for lives faithfully lived, for good memories and living hopes. We are reminded as we pray for family and friends who are touched with the feeling of sorrow, that we pray to one who does not let go unnoticed even the falling of a sparrow to earth. We pray to one who weeps for his world, and therefore we come trusting that in life or death, we may find rest and comfort in Him. In Christ Jesus, I pray. Amen

I knew and worked with Tom since coming up to the SAO in the Fifth Circuit after having spent 20 years in the Broward SAO. Tom was old school LEO although not as old as myself having worked the street in Dade County from 75-82. Tom was a true professional working his cases and was a great interviewer as he let the subjects' talk and didn't interrupt them knowing that when they lied we'd uncover it and put it to them at trial. Since 2002 the murders he put together or assisted with for prosecution and tried to a jury resulted in life sentences and/or a death sentence. I'll miss his hard work and his humor. May God Bless his family during these trying times. Thanks for being a true law enforcement professional. Pete

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

Detective Breedlove, Tommy, and I worked together interagency. Tommy, made me want to be not only a better officer but a better person. We speak so much of hero's and what they are. They come in many different forms. To me, and I used to tell him so, he was one of my hero's. I wanted to so much be like him not only professionally but personally. He dedicated to his family, church, and the community. He served with true humility never seeking personal recognition. He was a great Christian and it showed in everything he did.

Blessed are the peacekeepers, for they shall by called the children of God.

Tommy was one of the most selfless people you could ever meet. He was truly a genuine person. He was always cheerful and a true joy to be around. If you had the pleasure of knowing Tommy, you knew he was a dedicated husband and father, a faithful servant to the community, and an Angel to so many victims who had been harmed in unspeakable ways.

We at the Sheriff’s Office were blessed to have him in our ranks. While a gentle man, he walked tall and was well respected amongst his peers. To compare our time with Tommy ( and to borrow from Newton), “If we have seen farther, it was because we stood on the shoulders of a giant.” Tommy was that wonderful gentle giant who encouraged us and pushed us further than we thought we could go.

You will be missed my Brother. I will miss discussing history with you. You were a great detective, a scholar and academic, a wonderful person, and just an all around great guy. We have lost a true Treasure of the Law Enforcement community and Hernando County.

God Speed and I will see you again some day.

Rest in Peace brother and watch over us. We will protect and serve from here on in your honor.

I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, But tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.
