Reflections for Reserve Deputy Constable Martinus Melvin Mitchum

Requiescat in Pacem

Sergeant Mike O'Connor
Branford CT PD

March 1, 2021

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Mitch, you were a great policeman and an even better man. You never met a stranger and were willing to help anyone you came in contact with. Your death is a tremendous loss to the New Orleans community, especially the lives of the countless young people you touched. I only wish I could have been there Friday night.

Rest in God’s perfect peace!

Southern University at New Orleans Police Department

My brothers in blue. I am so sad for the family loss. I am a retired 29 year veteran of wearing a vest and a gunbelt (add 2 more years being Army strong). Anyone out there, please be safe, To the family, all of our love. I am white, and I know the deceased is black. I never saw color in my whole life, let alone my law enforcement life. In these crazy times where that is conversation, I do not agree. All of our love to our deceased brother. RIP my brother..
