Rest in Peace brother and watch over us. We will protect and serve from here on in your honor.

I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, But tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.

Lt. Terry Sampson began his career with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office on March 28, 1990 where we affectionately called the “7th Floor”. He dedicated his service to the D.S.C.O. & Detention Services Division. He diligently served in many capacities from the Security Division to the Training Division. All to return after retiring as “C-Squad Lieutenant” and continue serving in a Part-Time capacity. He was known across the state for his outstanding recruitment & networking campaigns. Known affectionately as “SAMP” we knew him as being “laid back”, but in his words, “Somebody got to tell the story”. The reality is he was a “loyal servant” helping and assisting his children & family, applicants, officers, detainees, and work family.

He was loved and respected by all and he truly loved his DCSO Family. Needless to say his “Dallas Cowboys” & NCCU Eagles even though he was an Aggie. When in your midst a good laugh was on the Agenda.

His Legacy will forever live on the walls of the Training Division, through every officer recruited past and present, cadets instructed and officers mentored. Most importantly through us, his DCSO Family.

Rest in Peace,
Lt. Terry Vernard Sampson

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Durham County Sheriff's Office. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!
