Well geez Jon, what can a man say except thank you for your true dedication. I just found out you had made the ultimate sacrifice (yes, been out of the loop since retirement) and wished to leave my thoughts here. Jon, I believe we all saw you as the type of guy that you just want to step back, get away and let go. Probably because not one of us had the true dedication you had. I for one had always respected that, you were a different cat, but I couldn't be like you, that is for sure not even in a 1000 years. But one thing was always certain and that is your heart of which I envy eventhough we all tried. That heart was true, and very real, I'm sure as we all have also tried. What others saw is exactly what you got from you, nothing is wrong with that. Guess that is what I respected and most likely all of us have. You were a true man, and I'm very confident that is exactly what those you served also saw, something we all struggle with. What more could anyone calling for assistance want than a true, real and genuine man as we all desire, someone like you. Not to mention your dedication to rural America as far as that goes (I cant help but recognize your work in the rural radio communications, I must admit most of us had no idea what you were talking about. It only makes it right that your name is on that wall with all those other heroes, your were selfless. Thank you Jon for being true and real and making us envy. You have truly earned your place on that wall and your mark here in Grant County will never go away as I'm sure you will be added to our memorial. God bless your soul Jon, until we meet again, thank you Melly Mel.

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

Sheriff Melvin, for many years, you dedicated your life to protecting others that they may be safe. It took a small virus to take your life. My heart breaks for your father who has lost his son. It is against the law of nature that a parent would outlive his child. Our Lord, who sees all and knows all, will reward you abundantly for your courage, dedication and selfless service. May He immerse you and your loved ones in His Divine Mercy. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant.

Rest in Peace brother and watch over us. We will protect and serve from here on in your honor.

I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, But tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.
