Time may have passed but you are not forgotten. I believe as long as someone remembers you or speaks your name, you are still with us.
Thank you for your heroism.

San Quentin's Administration are planning your 30th anniversary EOW. Those names engraved on the memorial tombstone outside the count gate should also have a memorial service for their ultimate sacrifice as well. This should be done every year, for every correctional personnel killed in line of duty at San Quentin. This way those that have walked the line after you can reminded that you are gone but DEFINITELY NOT FORGOTTEN!!! Those that knew you still show you love right now, those that never met you hear your energy through staff that worked with you. May GOD continue to bless you & your family, Thank you Sergeant Howell D. Burchfield (R.I.P)

I interviewed for the same position that you were promoted to. I did not get promoted until the next go around. I remember you and I were both outside the Captains office know why sitting there waiting for our interviews. I was promoted to SGT at S Q in Sept 86. My first 3rd watch shift I think was in North Block. I then was called upon to work overtime In South Block where You were taken from both your CDC family & Your Wife & children. I left S Q in early Jan for another job with the state. Holding the line always GD thanks for your Service.

Burchfield,
I enjoyed the times we had working at SQ, setting up the "Fish" Officers when they arrived, and wondering how long they would last on the Toughest Beat in the Nation. I still remember the day you were murdered as a very tough day to get through. I was honored to be choosen to act as one of your pallbearers. That was also a very tough day. Keep holding the Line.

Remembering you and your family today on this 27th anniversary of your eow. I am fighting hard to see that the justice given you and your family remains intact. Forty three death row killers murdered California law enforcement officers. If any of your family members see this, please contact me.

Rest In Peace.

I was in CDC training at Galt when we were notified of SGT. Burchfield's death. Remembering him helped me through my career and protect other officers.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 2th anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for the solace of all those who love and miss you for I know both the pain and pride are forever. How wonderful taht your daughter isn't a victim, but a survivor. I hope to one day meet your family at a NORCAL COPS function.
Rest In Peace

On the 25th anniversary of Sergeant Burchfield's death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Sergeant Burchfield is not forgotten.

On Tuesday it will be 25 years since your death. I turn 42 on Monday. I still have wonderful memories of my 17th birthday party. That was the last time I saw you.
You worked hard for your family, you sacrificed often for our well being. Walking through prison gates every day to support your family says it all. You always said, never be a victim. Bad things happen to good people and how we deal with tragedy defines us. Well Dad, I am not a victim. I don't mourn you...I celebrate you. You were funny, complicated and worth loving. You are missed very much.

A special ceremony was held last year at SQ on the annniversary of your death, arranged by the staff at SQ and myself. We were close like brothers and your loss has left a void within me. Thanks Jim Kinnard for that call!

Sgt. Burchfield
When I arrived from the academy and was assigned to you for my probation in East Block at San Quentin I will never forget the first thing you said to me. "Who is this CYA reject"? You gave me hell for my first 9 months during my probation with you. You also seen me come out of West Block one day with a bloody uniform and I guess I looked a little down and out. Your words to me were "Come on back in tonight, welcome to the circus R.D" From that point on I earned your respect many times during some rough times at San Quentin and I will never forget you. You were a fair sergeant to work for and you will be forever remembered by me. You were always pulling pranks on many of us newly assigned officers but you made San Quentin a good place to work. May you Rest In Peace,

Respectfully

Brother Burchfield,

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
And the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Respectfully,
You’re Brothers in Blue

Sarge, I can't believe it has been twenty years. With just two years in, I was still the rookie of our breakfast club that went out once a week after 1st Watch. I still have that empty feeling I felt that day..it comes back to me whenever I hear your name or another officer falls. You are still missed and remembered. Take care of our newest fallen hero.

Well Sarge as you know you have a rookie to look after up there in heaven. C.O. Gonzalez from Chino.. Watch over him. You know how those Raiders Fans are...
Your wife is doing an excellent job here for all of us that walk the line. I know you are proud of her.
You are not forgotten. There are too many of us dinosaurs still around that remember....
Rest In Peace...
