It is fitting today, Illinois Police Memorial Day that I relate this story .Last month while greeting a new class of constable/recruits at our police training school.I gave a little history of my police career and related that I had the honor of being with the Chicago Housing Aauthority Police Department. One of the recruits asked about the dangers of being the police in Chicago.I related that being the police anywhere in the world can be dangerous but knowing that you work with some of the finest people /around such as I had the honor to work with the C.H.A.P.D. and Officers like Jimmie Haynes makes you come backto duty every day.Rest in Peace Brother Jimmie!

Dear Jimmie,

I remember when we were in training in the Chicago Police Academy. We were the 1st class to graduate as Chicago Housing Authority Police Officers. How proud we were. We all wanted to serve the community in positive ways. It was inspiring.

I recall the night of the shooting, we were all so upset about what had happened to you. When I went to the hospital to see you the day after you were injured, I was hurt and angered that this had happened to you. I remember all of our police officers feeling such pain and anger about what had happened to you. I spoke to your wife afterwards. She was so sad and loved you so much. I remember her recalling how you turned around and said goodbye to her before you went to work the day of the shooting.

I remember how our training class used to admire that you had retired from the military at such a young age, and how proud you were to be able to start a new career. We all admired you so much. You were always so professional and respectful of everyone.

Our police department never seemed the same without you. You remind everyone of how important it is to live our lives to the fullest each day and to let our loved ones know that we love them always.

Thank you for your service, both in the military and with the Chicago Housing Authority Police Department. So proud to have met you Jimmie.

We know you are in a great place in heaven friend, with Jesus.

God bless you and your family always.

Officer Haynes, the story of your sacrifice has stuck with me since I first heard of it several years ago. While you may have passed on to heaven, your legacy here will always remain in the hearts and minds of those who keep your memory alive. Your bravery is an inspiration to us all. All I can say is, thank you.

Officer Jimmie Haynes was killed in the line of duty almost a year before I became a Chicago Housing Authority Police Officer. 20 some years later and I’m still thinking about him. I didn't know him but I knew of him and his sacrifice.

I think every Housing Cop knows we have a bond very few police officers have with their department. At the time we didn’t really think about how bad it was in the projects until we had to leave and find police jobs in other cities and states. That’s when I really started thinking why more "Robos" are not on that wall in Washington DC. Im sure the only reason is by the grace of God.

I am proud to say I worked with the men and women of the Chicago Housing Authority Police and proud to call Jimmie Haynes a brother.

Rest in peace Jimmie. Although the Department has vanished from the landscape of this country your heroism is eternal in the hearts and minds of the former Officers of the Chicago Housing Authority Police Department.
As I reflect on this May 2, 2013 (Illinois Peace Officers Memorial Day) about all the brave and honorable men and women I have worked with over the past 30+ years in law enforcement, I am humbled by the unbelievable bravery I witnessed each and every day on the part of the members of the CHAPD; they and you will never be forgotten. All gave some…some gave all…you gave all Jimmie . Thank you for your service and sacrifice.
I have the honor of working in my current law enforcement position with several of the warriors of the CHAPD in our new positions since the disbanding of the CHAPD; you would be proud of each and every one of them. They carry on the sacred tradition of the Chicago Housing Authority Police to better serve the citizens they are now sworn to protect.
Rest in peace soldier; rest in peace officer… always in our hearts; never forgotten……
Peace my brother-Jimmie Lamar Haynes- Chicago Housing Authority Police Dept.

Daddy, I miss you so much. I still relive the moment of seeing you that final time. I hate that you were taken from me as we were just beginning to know one another. The world may not have acknowledged me as being your first born, you always did and I love you for that always.
