THE FINAL INSPECTION:

The Policeman stood and faced his God.
Which must always come to pass
He hoped his shoes were shining bright
Just as brightly as his brass
“Step forward now, Policeman,
How shall I deal with you?
Hove you always turned the other cheek?
To my word have you been true?”
The Policeman squared his shoulders and said
“No, Lord, I guess I ain’t
Because those of us who carry guns
Can’t always be a saint.
I’ve had to work most Sundays
And at times my talk was rough.
Because the world is awfully tough.
But I never took a thing
That wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got to steep.
And I never passed a call for help.
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me.
I’ve wept unmanly tears.
I know I don’t deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fears.
If you’ve a place for me here, Lord,
It needn’t be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don’t, I’ll understand.”
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints often trod
As the Policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his God.
“Step forward now Policeman,
You’ve born your burdens well,
Come walk a beet on heaven’s streets.
You’ve done your time in Hell.”

The true measure of a person
is not found in the
might of their arm,
their wealth
or their power –
it is found in the strength
of their character.

There is no greater testimony to
ones character, than ones
willingness to sacrifice all,
in the noble quest of
providing protection to all
whom they serve.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Matt was killed in the line of duty.

To the Jones family, fellow deputies, and all who call Matt beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I know that that you will receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Deputy Jones gave to his community and the citizens of Texas and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on October 11, 2019.

Though I never had the pleasure of knowing Deputy Jones I have recently encountered a former colleague of his in my own department. Deputy Jones dedication to service and zeal for life were remembered fondly by this officer. I'm certain he is similarly remembered by countless others whose lives he touched. May you rest in peace and may your family find a measure of solace in the fact that your legacy is not forgotten.

A sad and tragic accident that took the life of a Brother and nearly killed another. My heart goes out to the Chief and his family, but Deputy Jones, my heart truly breaks for your family and friends. So long as they keep you in their hearts and minds, you will never truly be gone from them, but the pain will still be there, of course.

Rest in Peace, Brother and may God Bless you.
