Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Nicolas Blane Dixon

Deputy Dixon, it was my honor to have worked with you in the Jail. You are a real hero. I think of and pray for your family often, I know you are greatly missed.

It’s been just over two years and I’ve followed the trial over the internet. In SC, we didn’t get news coverage of it. All four have been punished through the court system for what they’ve done to you.
You’re a hero, and the ultimate example of who an officer should be. Rest In Peace, and keep watch over the rest of us. Much respect, much love.

I never met Blane Dixon, but had the honor of meeting and photographing his family this past week. His wife is beautiful, his mom and dad friendly and welcoming. His brothers gentlemen with kind and funny significant others. It’s easy to imagine what Blane must of been like after meeting the people closest to him. I am glad I got to learn about him, meet great people, and capture his kids with family while celebrating his life.

I love and miss you more as each day passes. The bond we shared will never be forgotten. Caden and Colt are doing just fine, and are growing into fine young men. They’re proud of their Dad, and miss you a lot.

Can’t thank you enough for your sacrifice and service, and want you to know your legacy will never be forgotten. My greatest honor was serving beside you.

I love you dude.

Blane, I constantly think of you, while working, out and about and among other things. You had the biggest brightest smile, and even after a 12-13 hour shift you were so giddy. I wish I could’ve told you that I was so proud of how far you came from when I first trained you. Instead, I said “be safe!” It was basically me telling you I loved you brother without actually saying that.

4 months, 4 months...many of us had time to mourn others are still healing and some have accepted the fact of your passing. There’s not a single day that goes by when I don’t think of you, I remember you giving me a hard time when I first started, all in good faith of course. But something I know I’ll never in my life ever forget is your smile. You brought joy, laughter and Fun to this community, there are so so many memories that I can think of with you but that’ll just go on for quite a while. One I do remember very much is when you and I would stick pens inside Officer Walker’s vest on he back to where her arms couldn’t reach or when I’d get called to booking to translate for you, while my time there one thing I always wanted to learn very well is how to be the best damn booking officer there was, you were efficient because you had a good partner next to you in classifications and none of us will ever forget you. We love you Dixon and will always think of you. - Jail #125

I wrote this shortly after Blane’s passing then I dreamed it. I heard his voice again in some old body cam footage and it tore me to pieces. If anyone can hear Blane’s voice as you read this, I am sorry for your loss. If you have no idea what his voice sounds like, you truly missed out on meeting a beautiful angel.

Patrol 90: “Go ahead, sweet pea”
*chirp* “Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover the basics of what I want to tell you. Thank you for all you’ve done. All the guys have been caught and nothing you ever did was in vain. You’re a damn good officer and an even better person. Thank you for teaching me all that you have and always being a great big brother. You loved what you did and you did it well. I look forward to the day I get to see your infectious smile again and hear you call me a bad ass tatter tot. I remember walking with you and Haupt and Alvarez into Human Resources to pick up our first paychecks together. De-Tac wasn’t as fun (the bruises took too long to fade) but I won’t forget it for as long as I live. I’m sorry Saturday never made it here so we could celebrate our 3 year anniversary of working together. When we meet again you gotta pull up in your car singing a thousand miles by Vanessa Carlton like you always did. You mean so much to a lot to people and you’ve touched more hearts than you could have ever imagined. From the calls you went on to the people you pulled over to the people you just randomly got outta your car to speak to all the way to the people who didn’t like you for their choice of actions still saying thank you for what you do and shaking your hand. Your light shines so bright and I’ll do everything I can to make sure your legacy lives on. I got it from here, bro. I love you.”
Patrol 90: “10-4 dear, thank you. I’ll stay in the area incase you need me.”

“Hey buuuudddyyyy”

These familiar words are the first thing to come to my mind any time you're mentioned. These words normally shortly preceded or followed your hand on my shoulder as you came up to greet me. These actions and words are still something I expect to hear and feel every time our sally port doors open, just as I still expect to see your familiar and warm smile that was always on your face. I've never been one to grow close to people, or even to reach out to coworkers. I've always kept coworkers as coworkers and friends as friends. But you were my friend despite that. Always kind, always helpful, always positive. I got along with you from the moment you started man, and it was truly my pleasure to spend countless hours with you as my booking officer (and Deputy Walker as our Classifications).

I could rant on and on about all the stories I have of you, from the time you thought you'd get fired for breaking the laundry door window, to the time you pulled up beside me (having recognized my car; I never realized you paid that much attention!) at a traffic light just to shout out the same familiar greeting that started this rant. These are stories that anyone who ever met you would have similar to share of though – you had that impact on people. You could meet a person once and leave a lasting impression for the rest of their lives. That charisma drew even many of inmates to respect you, to the point a few have even apologized for your loss. That infectious personality of yours is why we all respect you so much even now, and why it was an honor to work with you for so long.

Also, I'm sorry it's taken so long to say good bye. I've written this time and time again, in my head, on paper, and no matter what I've done it's never felt real. Even now, I'm staring at my screen wondering how this could have happened, but writing is my vice. It's my form of acceptance. And this is my good bye to you, my coworker, and my friend. You were taken before your time, and you'll be sorely missed. But your actions, and the memories and waves those actions created, will live on for many more years to come and will ensure you are never forgotten.

May you rest in peace, Patrol 90, Deputy Dixon.
