My condolences to his family, friends, and co-workers. Here is a poem I wrote and hope you can find comfort in it.

The Badge

John 15:13 King James Version (KJV) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends, (others).

The first responders wear a mask;
"Why?" Some may ask.
Because we believe in humanity.
Each of us, who laid our right hands
Upon the Bible, took an oath,
To protect and serve, this was
Our solemn troth.
Not only do Law-Enforcement,
Firefighters, and EMT's wear these
Badges of valor, but all whose
Reflections shine:
These are the Doctor's, Nurses,
PCT's, our Health Care providers,
Techs, Social Workers,
On down the line.
All of these precious lives do matter.

We knew, when we strapped
On our belts, we might not
Come home after our shift;
Each day could have been our last.
We are the role-models
And must pass on the eternal torch
Of self-sacrifice to our next generation.
We have quieted the child with tears;
We've sat with those those whose spirits
Needed a lift; we've cried with those who've
Suffered loss so they did not
Have to alone bare their heavy cross.
Love is an amazing gift.

We've been called by every name
Known to man;
Talked down those who've sought to maim
Whenever and whomever they can.
We've witnessed atrocities
Vengeful hearts,
Casting lots, and devising evil plots.
Yes, we lay down our lives everyday
To protect and serve.
We are the hero's ordained by God
Here on earth.
Say a little prayer for us,
And tell us you love us before
We walk out that door.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Luis died as a result of illness resulting from his heroic actions in the aftermath of 9/11.

To the Alvarez family, fellow officers, and all who call Luis beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support. I hope that that you receive that same kind of support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Detective Alvarez gave to his community and the citizens of New York and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 29, 2019. We shall never forget our 9/11 heroes. I also thank him for his service to our country in the Corps and bid him Semper Fi.

Rest in peace and may your family find some solace in the fact that you were a true hero, sir. I did not know you in life nor am I involved in any type of law enforcement, but I am a New Yorker and an American. You risked your life everyday as a PO and went above and beyond on 9/11 only to be thanked by a fatal illness and a Congress that had started to forget what a hero you were and the very least they could do would be to extend the 9/11 health care bill. Forgive them for such a heinous mistake and trust that there are millions, like me, who pray for you in life and the hereafter and stand in awe of your heroism. Thank you!

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray Psalm 91 over all LEO’s and this prayer also:

“Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are Your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, loving family, friends, neighbors and caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name and for Your Glory, Amen.”

I know that God sends those angels to watch over our officers, sometimes to protect them and sometimes to whisk our officers into His presence.

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

I have lifted your family to God every morning for over eight years. I pray that Luis' life and death will bring glory to His name.

Trust those prayers. God is with you; He knows and will ease your pain.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
