Reflections for Police Officer Robert Stanton McKeithen

This was no doubt the saddest moment in my 35 years as a Medical Technologist and Blood Bank Supervisor.

It is a privilege to continue donating blood in your honor every May.

Mac, still hard to believe you passed on my birthday. Therefore, I will never forget who you were to me during the years we worked together. I wish I could have been there for you.

Officer McKeithen was my first FTO on midnight shift after I was hired. We were immediately connected because of our prior military service. This was a very good man and dependable friend...

RIP, my neighbor for 19 years, and a great family friend. I wish that I would have spoken to you when I had the chance. I'm sorry to admit that I forgot about you until the morning of May 5th, 2019, after not seeing you in person for over a decade. I have a few pictures of yourself with my dad and your other mutual cop buddies for birthday parties and such at my house. And a couple of stories that still hurts too much to talk about sometimes, but will forever live on in my memories. Thank you for protecting the citizens of Biloxi and our country for as long as you did. I hope that you'll receive your neccessary justice as soon as possible.

Robert McKeithen was my first Field Training Officer on Midnight Shift during my employment at Biloxi Police Department. He was very calm under duress and the utmost professional when dealing with the public. He was extremely well liked with fellow officers and an incredible asset to patrol. I am grateful to have served with him during my LE career. I will not forget his death as it occurred on my birthday.

I remember getting the call from the lieutenant on the desk telling me to get dressed and go to Biloxi. After asking why, she said a Biloxi officer was shot. I’ve never gotten dressed so fast and I probably violated every traffic law getting over there. I went to their command post and the OIC had this dreary look in his eye. I was told who to relieve and his face was the same. Another Gulfport officer and I stayed at that intersection all night. We would have stayed another 24 hours if it was needed. You were loved by not only your city and department, but by every other as well. You have not died in vain and we will hold the line from here.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Today, I will not answer the radio call that you boyfriend has come home drunk and is beating you again. Today I will not answer the radio call that your 16 year old daughter, who is very responsible, is four hours late coming home from school. Today I will not answer the radio call that your store has been robbed or your house has been burglarized. Today I will not stop a drunk driver from killing someone. I will not catch a rapist or a murder or a car theft. Today I will not answer the radio call that a man has a gun or tried to abduct a child or that someone has been stabbed or has been in a terrible accident. Today I will not save your child that you locked in the car or the child you were to busy to watch who went outside and fell into swimming pool, but that I revived. No, today I will not do that. Why? Because Today I was killed be a drunk driver while I was helping push a disabled car off the highway. Today I was was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop to simply tell someone that they has taillight out. TodayI was killed in traffic accident rushing to help a citizen. Today I was shot and killed serving a warrant on a know drug dealer. Today I was killed be a man when I came by to do a welfare check because his family was to busy. Today I was killed trying to stop a bank robbery or a grocery store robbery. Today I was killed doing my job.

A chaplain and a officer will go to a house and tell a mom and dad or a wife or husband or mother or father won’t be coming home today. The flags at many police stations were flown at half-mast but most people won’t know why. There will be a funeral and my fellow officers will come, a twenty-one-gun salute will be given, and taps will be played as I am laid to rest my name will be put on a plaque , on a wall , in a building, in a city somewhere. A folded flag will be placed on a mantel or a bookcase in a home somewhere and a family will morn.

There will be no cries for justices. There will be no riots in the streets. There will be no officers marching , screaming “no justice, no peace.” No citizens will scream that something must be done. No windows will be smashed, no cars burned , no stones thrown,no names called. Only someone crying themselves to sleep tonight will be the only sign that I was cared about.
I was a police officer
