Dan was a friend and fellow LEO.
We worked together many times throughout the country and I respected his knowledge, ability, attitude and professionalism.
His passing will leave a great void in the ranks of all law enforcement.

Dan Hinton was , with no doubt, a great instructor and friend of mine. He evaluated my first dog down south and helped my aspirations come true as a K9 handler with the F.H.P. We attended the patrol's second ever S.W.A.T. school together in 1998 and often ran together in the back of the pack, but we never left each others side. Most of those troopers were half our age. Folks, that's the kind of man Dan was. If you fell back, he would too, so to pick you up and motivate you. I will miss him.

I'll place a band around my K-9 badge.

Master Trooper, Ret. Scott Howard
Florida Highway Patrol

Master DIAP Instructor Dan Hinton, you passed on your knowledge and wisdom to new Instructors to motivate interdiction officers to "do it the right way". You trained and touched many officers in the United States and Canada. We looked forward to seeing you again this year, and my children and grandchildren will miss your visit. I will miss teaching side by side with you.

Rest in Peace my brother Dan. May the Lord grant your family peace during this time. Our prayers are with your family, FHP family, your friends, and your DIAP family. Love you Dan.

I worked with Dan, who we called "Bubba" from his first day in Lee County back in 1986. At the time, it was not a popular posting for the FHP due to a heavy workload. Even though he was not from there, Dan stayed the course and remained in Lee County while others came and went. While law enforcement is serious business, I recall a number of funny stories about Dan while he worked. Our careers on the FHP took different paths, and his was a perfect fit for him in interdiction and training. His passion was catching the bad guys, and he was good at it. Dan was a friend and helped me both on and off duty.

Something many people don't know is that Dan was responsible for getting more pay for the troopers in Lee and Collier Counties, something in place to this day. We spoke to a legislative delegation in Naples and Dan gave them the trooper's point of view on the salary issue. He also was our F.A.S.T. representative for many years and helped look out for the troopers in that capacity. People get reputations after so many years of service, and all we need to know about Dan was the line of emergency vehicles from several area agencies that escorted him from the hospital. He was loved and will be missed greatly.

It was truly a shock to read about his death, but as another person noted here, he died doing what he loved. I'm just sad it was so soon for his family. I pray God will give them whatever peace is available for them during this time.
