I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Patrolman White, you and your partner Corporal Moak were performing your duties that you both knew put your lives in peril day after day. Despite that, you responded to the call of duty and you both died when your lives were just beginning. You died close to the age of our Lord Jesus Christ when He himself lost his life. Your selfless sacrifice will not go unnoticed by our Lord who sees all, and He will reward both of you abundantly - an eternity lived with Him in heaven, where there is no more pain, only endless joy. May you and your loved ones be immersed in our Lord's Divine Mercy. Rest in peace, good and faithful servants.
