Joe,

I write this now because I finally have the strength to not cry as I express my emotions/feelings. It has been more than two years since I last saw you. My heart still hurts, I still can not sleep, I still am angry and still grieve for losing you. But better days shall come in the future and I will never forget you...Brother. I was with you in your final moments holding your hand and telling you, "I got you...I'm here Joe." I'm glad I was there to comfort you and let you know, you had one of your many friends there right by your side. Love you Brother...It is never Goodbye, but I'll see you later. R.I.P. brother.

Memorial service to be held for slain MN corrections officer on one-year anniversary

PUBLISHED: July 15, 2019

The Minnesota Department of Corrections will host a memorial service Thursday in honor of Joseph Gomm, who was a corrections officer slain at the Stillwater Correctional Facility.

The ceremony will be led by the Department of Correction’s Chaplain Marty Shanahan, and Commissioner Paul Schnell will also speak. A moment of silence will be held, and a bench and rock monument in honor of Gomm will be unveiled.

The 1 p.m. ceremony will be held at the flag pole on the lawn of the historic warden’s house directly across the street from the Stillwater prison.

Gomm was bludgeoned to death while working in the prison’s industry building on July 18, 2018. An inmate, Edward Muhammad Johnson, a 43-year-old serving time on a murder conviction, has been now been charged in Gomm’s death with murder.

Gomm was a 16-year veteran of the department that was remembered as as dedicated officer who looked out for others.

Please excuse the unintentional error on my previous reflection. It should have read as follows. On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Joseph was killed in the line of duty.

To the Gomm family, fellow correctional officers, and all who call Joseph beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Correctional Officer Gomm gave to his community and the citizens of Minnesota and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 18th, 2018.
