Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Michael Robert Foley

I knew Mike Foley when was a little boy growing up in East Oakland. He attended St. Lawrence O'Toole school with my brother Dan Sullivan. Mike was my brother's closest friend in elementary school and we became acquainted with his father, Officer Lawrence Foley at OPD. Officer Foley used to regale us with stories of his experiences on the Oakland streets during the turbulent 1960s. As a young rookie in Concord, Mike would sometimes take my brother on patrol. Dan said that Mike, like his father, believed in proactivfe law enforecement - i.e., stop the
brouble before it starts.

I was sorrowed ot learn of Mike's untimely death and extend my sincere sympathy to his family. My brother, who lost touch, predeceased him three years ago at age 57. I will remember both as michevious little kids who
vexed the nuns but were beloved by those around them.

In Honor of your Sacrifice and for your family and friends, I salute you as a HERO!

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one who’s blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the Alameda County Sheriff's Office. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!

Mike,

My fondest memories will be the stories we shared about the hunting trips you would take with your son. You glowed with pride every time you showed me pictures of his catch. You were so proud of him. You had a smile from ear to ear when you mentioned his name. I'll never forget that smile.

All my love, thoughts and prayers are with your family.

My heart goes out to the family, friends and co-workers (a sort of hybrid of the first two) at the passing of Deputy Foley. God Bless you Brother and may you eternally Rest in Peace.

My heart also goes out to the driver of the bus who no doubt is in a personal hell right now. Go with God, regardless of how it happened, it was an accident.

Both persons are in my prayers as are all who have been affected by this tragic event.

Mike, I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. You were a man of impeccable moral character, respectful and kind to all around you, and your professionalism and work ethic was second to nobody. You were one of the first deputies I had to pleasure to work with, memories I'll not forget. Your untimely demise leaves a real void in our agency. Your spirit and your memory will live on for years to come. Thank you again for everything,
