Every time an officer dies in a situation like this it hits me hard, perhaps a tiny bit harder than those who are killed due to intentional criminal action.

Here's a guy who sacrificed his own life to save that of a stranger. A stranger who, at the moment, saw no value in her own life. But Officer Mumaw saw differently, he recognized the value of all life and placed himself in mortal peril and ultimately sacraficed his own life in order to protect this woman from herself. He is an example of the most noble and honorable among us.

I feel sorrow for the loss his family must endure, horror at the fact that his last moments were probably terrifying for him, and grieve for his coworkers and community.

And yet, I'm heartened by the fact that there are still people like Officer Mumaw out there, a glimmer of hope and light in a world gone dark.

I sincerely hope the suicidal woman turns herself around and goes on to live a good life, a life that brings peace and joy to others, a life which recognizes and honors the second chance that Officer Mumaw gave her.

Eric, news of your passing this morning was like a punch in the gut. You were known throughout the department as a good man, a great person, a dedicated police officer, and a loyal friend. You will be missed by all of your fellow officers, friends, and family. You lived your life to serve and gave the ultimate sacrifice in that service. Thank you Eric, for all that you did for our community. We will continue to serve the citizens of Nashville in your honor and will never forget you.
