Gull Lake school lunch debt paid off by fallen police officer’s memorial fund

RICHLAND, MI -- Students and their parents can breathe a sigh of relief after more than $3,500 in school lunch debt was paid off in honor of a Gull Lake High School graduate and fallen police officer.

The Officer Collin Rose Memorial Fund donated $3501.28 to pay off the school lunch debt of 587 students in Gull Lake Community Schools, according to a press release from the memorial foundation.

Rose was a Wayne State University police officer who died in the line of duty on Nov. 23, 2016, according to collinrosememorial.org.

Rose, a 2006 Gull Lake High School graduate, was proud of his hometown, Foundation President Chris Powell said in the release.

“We’re honored to give back to the community in his name,” Powell said. "We hope this donation helps rectify the situation and clear the debt of all these families so their children can eat warm meals and concentrate on their studies.”

The Officer Collin Rose Memorial Foundation was established in July 2017. The nonprofit hosts events to bring together survivors, provides safety gear to police dogs, aid animal welfare organizations and provide scholarship opportunities to students.

Collin,

Hard to believe its been just over two years. I went and visited the memorial on Lincoln last month. I just wanted to say thanks for always backing us up and always smiling whenever you came by one of our runs or stops. I hope your family knows that the men and women of the Third Precinct continue to think very highly of you. Until next time my friend.

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Remember I picked up the meat lovers pizza from Z's after leaving the DDC? You owe me a pizza. In all fairness though, I still have the inflatable sleeping mat you "lent" me for freshman quest.... and I think I have the special collar you gave me for Maci when I told you she was a huge pit bull but turned out she was like 20lbs soaking wet when I picked her up from the Humane Society. She's about 30-35lbs now, happy and energetic. She had a good time playing with your k9's. Watch over us brother.. I'll bring a beer or two by soon.

Collin,
Sitting here at work getting ready for the fundraising "season" for the Police Unity Tour. Not a day goes by without you in our thoughts. Every time we (the boys and ladies of the bus) get together you are ALWAYS the topic of conversation. Frank had your seat done in your department colors with your patch and EOW. Nobody sits there but Nikki. Just the way it is.

As a WSU grad and former Detroit PD officer, I have always had an extreme amount of respect for the WSU Police Department. When I was last at the university, it was located in the middle of the 13th Precinct and the Cass Corridor, a true war zone, hence my appreciation for its officers. I was saddened to learn of the death of Sergeant Rose and I pray for him and that his loved ones find peace.
