Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Patrolman Scott Leslie Bashioum

A portion of a letter written by President Abraham Lincoln, printed in the Boston Evening Transcript on November 25, 1864.

“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic (he) died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln”

Avenue of the Fallen

Standing at attention in their class “A“uniforms, badges gleaming and shoes like glass, are your brothers and sisters of Law Enforcement. All of whom have previously paid the ultimate price.
Today, like many others, they welcome you to this wonderful place.
As you march down the Avenue of the Fallen, all eyes focus on you as if to say “it’s OK, you’re with your eternal partners.”
A salute is followed and a tear can be seen on so many faces.
Welcome, you served well.
Now come join us in the ranks, another is coming home.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

For Police Officer Scott Bashioum:

The police officer of any jurisdiction receives his badge and takes a pledge to place him/herself in any situation when a call for help is received. Though each call might become routine, the fact remains that he or she might be killed. An awesome responsibility that is seemingly not appreciated by the average citizen.
Officer Bashioum was slain by a deranged person who had neither respect nor any hesitation to murder other human beings by his wanton willingness to ambush a cop, viscously slay his own loved one, and then proceed to take his own life. It is the act of a wretch, a criminal and coward.
Each of us that wears a badge is shocked and saddened by this irresponsible act. But never is our determination to keep law and order vanquished. In fact we become even more determined to continue our mission - to protect and to serve our community and it's people in it.
To the dedicated law-officer an oath is the essence of ourselves as a whole, and defines us as true soldiers-of-the-law. It is what each of us who is a cop accepts and is ready to live-up to - our integrity. It creates the very aura of being a hero and precisely what separates us from all others - except perhaps the military man or woman going into battle. We are the few. We do not seek anything beyond keeping our honor - an almost forgotten aspect about such service and our commitment to duty and to others.
Officer Bashioum is more than a hero - he is the true image of admiration, and he stands now at the forefront of all those who have died keeping others safe. We owe him more than what we can ever pay both in tribute and appreciation. May he rest in peace.
It is fitting, especially on this Veteran's Day of 2016, that he be recognized comparatively as being among the gallant few.
