Reflections for Sergeant Paul E. Brooks

I was very little, 5 or 6 years old, when I met Paul. He would come to visit his sister in Astoria. I have never forgotten him.........Rest in peace Paul.

Paul Brooks Jr.
It was my honor wearing your dads shield for 14 years. I thought that they would have retired that after he was killed. When I got promoted many new sgts had nice bright new shields. When I was given your dads it looked old lol. But I’ll never forget that number nor your father. I didn’t realize I was was wearing your dads until many years later. I grew up right near where your father was killed and passed there many times. Coincidence? Maybe not.

Thank you all for your kind reflections for my father. He died when I was 2 years old, but I heard very good things about him. I did meet Cheif of Utica Police Pat Orsino and his family notably Rose his wife and Patty his daughter. I also remember Bryan (Fitz) Fitzgerald, also NYPD, and was fond of him, and his family Brian Jr. Jerry, Gail, and Morjeane. I also want to thank Sgt Ritt for that honorable gesture of gving shield 1138 to the MemorialI believe in Albany; that was stand up. Thank all of you

Paul was my godfather. He used to come round to visit on occasion riding his NYPD motorcycle and take me for spin around the block, holding me close to himself. I was only five years old when he died yet I vividly recall my mom coming in to wake me with the news as I lay in my crib. His wife was Dotty and he had a daughter Maureen and son, Paul Jr. They lived in Levittown NY. I think Paul was in CID with my dad in the Army during the WWII. They were best of friends. I was only a small child but I recall Paul's vibrant personality even now as smile at his memory.

My father was a cop in Utica, NY and knew SGT Brooks. Not sure if it was from the war or from their police jobs (my dad was a bike cop in the 1950s). One day in 1969 SGT Brook's son stopped by our house to visit my father. My family reconnected with Mrs. Brooks and got together with her also. The police family is connected and is international. I am currently a SGT with the Monroe County Office of Sheriff (soon to retire). I hope the Brooks family is well and SGT Brook's memory lives on.

My shield #1138 was assigned to me in 1986 when I got promoted to Sgt. In early 2000 I received a call from personel requesting my shield, so they could put it in the NYPD museum for MOS that were killed LOD. Little did I realize that I had Sgt. Brooks' original shield on for over 14 years. Needless to say I gave it up and was assigned another shield #. I wish I could have met him or his family. I wore that shield honorably--thank you Paul.
