Reflections for Police Officer Cody James Brotherson

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln

Officer Brotherson faithfully served the largest Utah city by land area and one of the toughest communities in the entire state with more than 110,000 calls for police service per year.

It takes a special type of person to be a West Valley City officer. Officers with years of experience have tried being officers in West Valley City and failed. I am one such example.

Even though West Valley City has a statistically higher crime rate than most other Utah cities, Officer Brotherson became the first officer in West Valley City killed in the line of duty since the city was incorporated in the 1980's.

My recollection of Officer Brotherson is one of a brave, young officer, who truly loved his job and the citizens of his community. He was a great role model and we would do well to implement his lifestyle into our lives. May he rest in the arms of his creator, patrolling the golden streets of Heaven.

My, what a fine looking young man! Please accept our most sincere condolences concerning the loss of this hero. I know nothing can be said to ease your suffering. He is fallen. But by the grace of our God, he will arise and sit on the right hand of the Lord. He is a peacemaker. He joins his brothers in blue who have gone before him and will welcome those of us, who are still to fall in this battle against evil. He is an Angel now. Watch over us Cody as we go about the days work!
