Dear Justin:

I don’t know what breaks my heart more: the fact you were so young, younger than my children, almost a baby; the fact that that cowardly bastard not only committed this heinous act, but did it again 20 minutes later; or the fact that our bedeviled media hasn’t covered this like they would if it were you who did the shooting. Regardless, you are gone, but NEVER to be forgotten. Your sacrifice, like too many other of our brothers and sisters, was done so without selfishness or hesitation. Thank you for that.

The oath you took to “Protect and serve” is not a cliché. It’s a code; OUR CODE, that we live by. Many Americans have no idea, including politicians, of what it REALLY means to PROTECT AND SERVE. But we do, you did. Never knowing if today is THE day. If today are family will have to endure a life time of pain and sorrow, loneliness and heartache. But yet we do it, not for ourselves, for glory, prestige, money, (really?), but because somebody has to stand up against the evil of the world and protect and American way of life. And you did.

May Almighty God help heal your family, your agency, our nation, and hold you forever in the palm of His hand. Rest in peace, we have the watch. Our “Thin Blue Line” may have been stretched a bit thinner, but the line has, and ALWAYS WILL, hold. Rest in peace. “Above all else, honor”.

Officer Martin, it breaks my heart that a young man like you would die at such a young age. But it is not for us to understand what was in God's mind in allowing this, we only have to trust that it is for the good. May you rest in peace, and may God's Divine Mercy immerse you in His love.

I read Mr. Martins words about his son in the Des Moines Register on line. I also read about the many accomplishments of Justin and one in particular caught my attention; that he attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Every Eagle Scout I have have met or learned about in my life rings true to this day without exception. And that is they grew to be upstanding and admirable men. And from what I read Justin was no exception either. I noted a picture of him being sworn in looked exactly like my son when he was sworn in at the age of 21 on a suburban Chicago department. It caused me to stop and think about fate, life and ambitions. And those qualities ended violently all to soon in the midst of the shortened and stolen lives of both officers yesterday morning. And for what, why? Our nation grieves for you Mr. Martin, your family and the family of the Des Moines sergeant who was also a dedicated young man from the story about his life too. Our condolences to you all. You are going to see a great many police officers from here out there in the upcoming days to express that our police and we citizens stand with you too,

"The Thin Blue Line"

There is a line
the color of the sky
on a clear afternoon

There is a line
the hue of the ocean
on a bright sunny day

There is a line
the purest shade of a newborn's eyes
awakening for the first time

There is a line
that protects us from harm
in all we do
whether day or night

There is a line
no one can penetrate
no one can alleviate

There is a line
made of those who choose
to follow a calling many do not hear
and still more do not comprehend

They choose to walk
the path of fear, hate, and mistrust
taken by so few
but marked by so many

And when one leaves this line
they leave a legacy
but the line does not break
for the remaining must still protect

There may be emptiness
a loss, or sadness
but never a hole
not in this line

This line that holds
the ghosts of the souls who have gone
and the souls of the ghosts who will be
The Thin Blue Line
