Jack, you were one of the kindest people to me in Alturas when I worked dispatch at the Sheriff's Office, even though you were APD at the time. You were needlessly kind and encouraging to me. Thank you for everything you taught me, for everything you helped me with, for your kindness. I never forgot your kindness. Not once. Thank you for always smiling.

Deputy Hopkins,
May you rest in peace. I never had the honor to meet you, but then I didn't have to. You honored your profession and your family everyday. You were taken far too soon and I wish I could change that but I can not. We are fortunate to be able to serve in our profession and you paid the intimate price. I pray your family may someday find peace. You are a true hero to all. Your watch is over now and you can rest. God bless and know you will never be forgotten

An open letter to the people of the United States:

Was it a good night’s sleep? Are the kids ok, and the house secure? Feel refreshed and ready to go today? How about that family outing or a trip to the mall? Fun, right? Attending the kid’s graduation or their marriage? Ok, now thank a police officer like Jack that you got that good night’s rest, or family is safe. Your home secure and a family outing will be fun, the wedding will be a memorable one.
Yes your life matters. All life matters, even Jack’s. But Jack gave his so you can have all the above and never know the fear, concern, the loneliness of graveyard shifts and the thought of never seeing your family again. He, and thousands of others, make this sacrifice every day for you, FOR YOU! Should you feel pity? No, not pity. RESPECT AND GRATITUDE, to Jack, his family and every law enforcement officer that every day, puts on a badge and a gun to guarantee that you WILL enjoy the life our forefathers dreamed of. Freedom, free from fear, free from harm and live in peace.
Thank you Jack, for your dedication to your oath, OUR oath, “Protect and serve”. Many think of it as an old cliché. To those of us on the Thin Blue Line, it’s a code we live by. Forever you will be one of America’s heroes, who gave his life that others might live theirs in peace. Yes, freedom doesn’t come free; even in the Homeland.
So if you attend a sporting event, how about standing for the playing of the National Anthem? If not for patriotism, how about standing for Taps for Jack and the thousands of others who gave all so you can sit down during the National Anthem?
Rest in peace, Jack. We have the watch. May Almighty God hold you, your family, and every law enforcement officer in the palm of His hand.
Amen.

Sgt. Ron Tomassi, Retired
Lake Mary Police, Fl.
