Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Jose Gilbert Vega

I was born and raised in Palm Springs. Moved to Oregon and became a cop. I retired in 2014 when I realized that the respect level for police officers by the general public had dipped to levels that were unacceptable to me.

Today is a shock to my family and me. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of Officer Vega and Officer Zerebny.

I miss my hometown.

Thank you for putting your lives on the line everyday.

Officer Zerebny we are saddened by your violent death and thankful for your dedication and service to your community. We pray for the Lord's peace to be with your family, friends and co-workers and we ask that the offender be met with swift justice.
This is a sad day, Rest in Peace brother.

A Prayer for Police Officer Jose Gilbert Vega:

Lord God, you are always faithful and quick to show mercy. Our Brother-in-Blue, Police Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, of the Palm Springs, California Police Department, was taken from us suddenly and violently in the Line-of-Duty. Come swiftly to his aid, have mercy on him, and comfort his family, friends, and colleagues by the power and protection of the Cross. Heavenly Father, as we mourn the death of our Brother-in-Blue, Police Officer Jose Gilbert Vega, show us the immense power of your goodness and strengthen our belief that he has entered into Your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied. God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God. God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs." [Matthew 5:3-10 NLT]

"For the policeman does not frighten people who are doing right; but those doing evil will always fear him. So if you don't want to be afraid, keep the laws and you will get along well. The policeman is sent by God to help you. But if you are doing something wrong, of course you should be afraid, for he will have you punished. He is sent by God for that very purpose. Obey the laws, then, for two reasons: first, to keep from being punished, and second, just because you know you should." [Romans 13:3-5 TLB]

"There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." [John 15:13 NLT]

"Well done, my good and faithful servant." [Matthew: 25:21 NLT]

May God Bless you and your family. As a 25 plus year veteran police officer, I cannot and will not ever be able to just move on after such a tragic loss. Both of you served with honor and integrity whether it was 35 years or 18 months you both paid the ultimate price for our free sometimes ungrateful society. I remember back when all of our lives mattered Especially the Blue Lives. May God have you both in his Glory and Thank you for your service and sacrifice to our community and profession Law Enforcement!!

Our Nation is consumed with lawlessness and terror and every day the men and women of Law Enforcement still wage that war. We are humbled by your sacrifice. I pray this will end but I know differently. Not until the lack of leadership in this nation changes will we see a change in its people and the respect and admiration for law enforcement return. 48 years ago I donned the uniform of a police office and though long retired now, in a manner of speaking I have never taken it off. Prayers for my Brothers.
