Reflections for Captain Robert David Melton

Melton, you were one of my best friends and someone I greatly admired. It’ll be 8 years this coming July that you were senselessly taken away from all of us. I will never forget where I was when I’d heard of your murder, the impact it has had on me is indescribable. I miss you immensely and will never forget you my dear friend and mentor. There’s never a day that goes by that I don’t think of you and what an amazing force you were. Godspeed my friend.

Today an Overland Park Police Officer was killed in the line of duty while serving and protecting. While this is heartbreaking news I was immediately thrust back to the emotions and thoughts at the time of your murder. You were a man of integrity, honor, and heroism. You were the leader of men and will always be missed. You were the one Sergeant and Captain that I looked up to and aspired to be remotely like. This Kansas City Kansas Police Department is not the same without you. The leadership in the department is extremely poor and non-existent since your passing and the men and woman of this department miss your leadership every day.

I found this website completely by accident today. I was out of the area when this happened and a friend called and told me it was just down the road from my house. I was very sad to hear the news especially since it was so close. I was already grateful for his sacrifice but seeing the actual location, his face, and hearing his friends refer to him by “Dave” (my same name) really bring it’s home. As it turns out it’s not even a mile away and I consider it my house he died protecting when I say
“Thank you officer Robert David Melton for protecting us and keeping us safe.”
God Bless you and your family

John 5:28, 29 - "Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out". I pray that everyone can find peace in knowing that we will see this officer as well as many others again in Paradise soon. Until then, please accept my condolences.

Captain, I heard a portion of the radio call that day and the sound of your officers voices while helping you will forever be clear in my mind. I knew it was an officer down by their tone and urgency. While your fellow officers attended your services, I had the honor of patrolling your streets for them. Standing at the location you were murdered really hit home with me. I still wear the thin blue line wristband your department gave us for helping. As 2016 came to a close, I continued to think about that day despite never meeting you. Rest In Peace sir, we'll take it from here.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Dave was killed.

To the Melton family, fellow officers, and all who call Dave beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Captain Melton gave to his community and the citizens of Kansas, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on July 19, 2016.
