My heart goes out to Sgt. Bumgartner and especially his family. He's with God and they will need God to help them thru this. It's a tragedy for his department, friends, fellow officers, other nearby departments, and all 900,000+ retired and active officers any who have or are wearing a badge.
Chases are tough and very misunderstood by some bosses and almost all of the public. They think it's funny to us. Theres no idea the pressure on an officer but we can't just let them go. We have no idea till apprehended why they are running. Some just killed an officer or someone else but hasn't hit dispatch yet. Some have kidnapped persons, drugs etc. in vehicle and yes some are just stupid. But although we have great superhuman powers we don't see thru things or read minds yet. We are condemmed if we do or if we don't.
The driving public should remember most states law requires that the civilian driver sees his or her way clear of intersection before entering no matter light or no light color of that light or any other traffic commands. Emergency vehicles when operating as such lights siren etc. although have to use caution have right of way. If civilian drivers would pull their heads out of their asses we could avoid some of these needless colisions.
Go with God my brother.
