On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Natasha was killed.

To the Hunter family, fellow officers, and all who call Natasha beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Hunter gave to her community and the citizens of Louisiana, and for the supreme sacrifice she and her family, especially her daughter, made on June 7, 2016.

"The Thin Blue Line"

There is a line
the color of the sky
on a clear afternoon

There is a line
the hue of the ocean
on a bright sunny day

There is a line
the purest shade of a newborn's eyes
awakening for the first time

There is a line
that protects us from harm
in all we do
whether day or night

There is a line
no one can penetrate
no one can alleviate

There is a line
made of those who choose
to follow a calling many do not hear
and still more do not comprehend

They choose to walk
the path of fear, hate, and mistrust
taken by so few
but marked by so many

And when one leaves this line
they leave a legacy
but the line does not break
for the remaining must still protect

There may be emptiness
a loss, or sadness
but never a hole
not in this line

This line that holds
the ghosts of the souls who have gone
and the souls of the ghosts who will be
The Thin Blue Line

A Prayer for Police Officer Natasha Hunter:

Lord God, you are always faithful and quick to show mercy. Our Sister-in-Blue, Police Officer Natasha Hunter, of the New Orleans, Louisiana Police Department was taken from us suddenly and violently in the Line-of-Duty. Come swiftly to her aid, have mercy on her, and comfort her family, friends, and colleagues by the power and protection of the Cross. Heavenly Father, as we mourn the death of our Sister-in-Blue, Police Officer Natasha Hunter, show us the immense power of your goodness and strengthen our belief that she has entered into Your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we ask that you grant us a deeper appreciation for the efforts of all law enforcement officers and officials in our communities, states, and nationwide. For their dedication to our security, order and peace, we give You thanks. May they be encouraged in their work which benefits us ALL. Help us to grow that spirit of community that will make their job both easy and fulfilling. And now may our fellowship together and Your blessing upon them bring a renewed sense of partnership and joy for all of us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” [Matthew 5:9 ESV]
