A Prayer for Police Officer Verdell Smith, Sr.:

Lord God, you are always faithful and quick to show mercy. Our Brother-in-Blue, Police Officer Verdell Smith, Sr., of the Memphis, Tennessee Police Department was taken from us suddenly and violently in the Line-of-Duty. Come swiftly to his aid, have mercy on him, and comfort his family, friends, and colleagues by the power and protection of the Cross. Heavenly Father, as we mourn the death of our Brother-in-Blue, Police Officer Verdell Smith, Sr., show us the immense power of your goodness and strengthen our belief that he has entered into Your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we ask that you grant us a deeper appreciation for the efforts of all law enforcement officers and officials in our communities, states, and nationwide. For their dedication to our security, order and peace, we give You thanks. May they be encouraged in their work which benefits us ALL. Help us to grow that spirit of community that will make their job both easy and fulfilling. And now may our fellowship together and Your blessing upon them bring a renewed sense of partnership and joy for all of us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.” [Matthew 5:9 ESV]

“Greater love has no one than this that someone lay down his life for his friends.” [John 15:13 ESV]

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Your heroics cannot and could never be praised enough. Though you sacrificed your life, I cannot fathom how many you saved from this maniac's rampage.

Though you are gone physically, you will always be with your family and friends.

God Bless you, Brother and may your eternal rest be ever peaceful.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Verdell was killed.

To the Smith family, fellow officers, and all who call Verdell beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

My heart broke a little more when I saw you in your recently taken I Matter Photo. Yes, you mattered then and will always matter to your Thin Blue Line family.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Smith gave to his community and the citizens of Tennessee, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on June 4, 2016.
