I live in the neighborhood adjacent to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and the UCCS police patrol our neighborhood along with the Colorado Springs Police Department. I never met Officer Swasey, but I recognize his picture and recall seeing him out on calls or patrolling the area.

This city has been shaken to the bone by this incident and more so by the bravery and sacrifice of Officer Swasey. The loss of Officer Swasey is not only a loss to his family, the University and the city, but also to humanity. I hope that Officer Swasey's family can find some small amount of solace in knowing that the entire city grieves with them.

Officer Swasey,

Godspeed and rest in peace, brother. You are a champion on so many levels, in sport, spirituality and life. I am inspired by how you died and how you lived. I am heart broken for your two kids and your wife who now becomes a single parent and has to navigate life's journey on her own. If you have every lost anyone you loved in the line of duty, the sense of loss and pain never leaves. The sacrifice is immense and suffocating.

I am humbled and grateful we have people like you who rise to a level of selflessness the protected will never know. I am so sorry for your loss to the family of Garret Swasey; especially his wife and children.

With love and respect,
Mark Bolz, 1st Lt USMC (former)
