"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Trooper Jursevics - I slept soundly, just a few, single-digit miles from the spot where you were taken from your family. I know the cop who arrested the man who likely hit you, and used to lead that small-town department - I'm proud of the work he did. The photo of you and your daughter, in your patrol unit, was shared and my heart just broke.

Thank you for your service to the people of the Castle Rock area and the State of Colorado. May God grant you eternal rest and may His perpetual light shine upon you. Sleep well, Trooper, we have the watch from here on.

Jaimie, I never knew you although I work not too far away from your area. My heart was truly broken as I was on patrol and dispatch sent out the message of your passing on our in car computers. The State Patrol has always been an agency I looked up to as Troopers are a different breed of cop. I felt the momentous honor of wearing my uniform and badge while serving the community that night, and every night. I make traffic stops and investigate accidents on the same highway in which you fell in the line of duty. It really opened my eyes to the realities we face on a regular basis and just how quick things can change. May your passing never be forgotten, but more importantly may the way you lived be forever told as example of courage and honor to others who will come after you, as well as all others who knew you or hear your story. We will carry on in your stead and take the watch from here sister. We love you and are humbled by your sacrifice. I'm sure your husband and family will tell your daughter what an amazing mother you were as you watch over them from your place in heaven. As Einstein once said, "A LIFE LIVED FOR OTHERS IS THE ONLY LIFE WORTHWHILE." Respectfully, Thank you again Trooper Jursevics.
