My deepest condolences to your family, friends, and fellow LEO's. Thank you for your service to Our Country, and to the city of Rio Rancho. Another cowardly act took the life of a good man, and officer who went out everyday to make his community safer.

Hey brother,
It's been a whirlwind of a summer, yet it seems like yesterday when we were talking about me leaving. I see your face all over social media and it makes me smile knowing you've not been forgotten. I think about you every day. I see your lovely bride has taken up the fight to make sure the state of New Mexico doesn't let anyone else who should be incarcerated out to victimize more people. She always was a fighter, wasn't she? I still can't believe you're gone! I miss you brother! It seems like you're getting more and more company up there...a sad reflection of the state of our country. Welcome them with open arms like you did to any new officer on the department. Continue to watch over us and protect us. I can still hear you singing You'll Never Walk Alone and I know with you watching over is that we will never walk the beat alone again.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Nigel was killed.

To the Benner family, fellow officers, and all who call Nigel beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Benner gave to his country through his military service and to his community and the citizens of New Mexico as a police officer, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on May 25, 2015

Nigel was a good man. I met him in Kabul when he was in the Air Force. He truly cared about the future of the Afghans, and worked hard to improve their fledgling air force. He was smart, funny and a joy to be around.

I was honored to attend Officer Benner's service today, which was very moving. I have visited the memorial site twice now, once a week ago and again today after the service. Really took me back that it had more than doubled in just a week. Thank you Officer Benner for your service, and thank all law enforcement for putting your life on the line for us each and every day! God bless Julie, his children and his brothers and sisters!!

I have, in my various stages of life, had encounters with LEOs...mostly speeding or traffic tickets, a few resulting in a night or two as a guest of the city. However, I have the deepest respect for LEOs...their job is dangerous, but when a citizen needs assistance, be that directions, a call for a friend to come help or to a towing company, the LEOs have always been there. They also respo0nd quickly to those "bump in the night" fears we sometimes encounter.

Officer Benner not only was such an officer, he also served the nation in a career with the US Air Force.

Doing his duty, alone, and with a known career criminal, he was mortally wounded. Renumber this warrior and patriot, nit just today, but every time you see a patrol car or motorcop...and salute them talk to them, pick up the tab for their meal or coffee. We owe these men and women...God bless them and keep them safe.
