Reflections for Auxiliary Deputy Sonny Allan Smith

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting my Niece's husband, I too feel a sense of loss, not only the loss of a brother Officer but the first family member to be killed in the line of duty. My Grandfather, William Mauldin, was a Motor Officer in San Jose, CA who was injured on duty while attempting to stop a robbery suspect. He retired due to his injuries. I recently retired after 40 plus years in law enforcement. Over the years I lost several Officer friends who died in the line of duty. This is different and much closer to home. Rest in Peace Sonny

Brother Smith: You are a true representative of the Warrior Spirit. Despite suffering a mortal wound you fought to the end. You have earned your place in paradise. Please watch over us so we may continue to cover the watch in your absence.

To Mrs Smith and your Children: Your husband and father is a hero, without a doubt. Remember the man as he lived, and I sincerely hope that the cherished memories of him, and the pride of knowing he devoted himself to the service of others helps carry you through the anguish of your loss.

Sonny, you are true hero. Not only because you wore a uniform, but because of the way you lived your life. Your actions on that horrible night saved my life. Your memory will live forever in my heart. Rest easy, Brother. We love you.

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray:

“Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are Your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, loving family, friends, neighbors and caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name and for Your Glory, Amen.”

I have lifted you and your family to God every morning for over four years. Feel those prayers. God is with you; He knows and will ease your pain.

Our faith helps us to see beyond the grave.

My prayers and condolences to the family and colleagues of Deputy Smith. No words bring comfort during this moment in your lives. I may not be in your part of the country but believe me when I say this, the pain is real when one of us is lost in the fight for good against evil. The courage it takes to move forward when others are run away is what makes true warriors willing to be that defense against evil when they are needed most. Rest now, we have the watch.
