Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Lamar Wells

The original poem written in 1932 by Mary Elizabeth Frye:
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

God is with you, DUSM Josie Wells...your family is in my prayers today and always. I will raise up your name to the Lord at mass this weekend.

As I talk to friends that knew you I become closer and closer to knowing you as well. You have been described as a "good ol southern boy" that was always there for his brothers and sisters of our agency! The world has become a little less safe without your presence. Thank you for wearing the Star and being part of our family. Love you brother and may you forever rest in peace! My condolences and full support go out to your family!

'The Outlaw' Josie Wells. Josie was a classmate of mine and my fellow DUSMs of BDUSM 201. Josie was an individual who truly characterized a dedicated Law Enforcement Officer. He was brave, kindhearted, trustworthy and selfless to a fault, which in turn lead to his passing. He gave everything he had in order to be the best for not only the United States Marshals Service, but to those he swore to protect and serve. Josie was a husband, a son, a nephew and a brother to all that had the honor of serving alongside of him. He will forever be remembered as a hero and will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace, Brother.

I was lucky to spend some time with Josie when he came and supported a high threat trial in our District. He was a great guy to be around, and people were naturally drawn to him. It breaks my heart that such a life is gone. I can speak for the other guys in Kansas and say we are just sick with the news, but we will remember our brief time together for the great time it was. May God Bless his Family.

Police officers dedicate their lives to protecting the public. Far too often, the public does not appreciate it. Worse, today their is an atmosphere of distrust of police fomented by our own political leaders.

Instead of holding forth criminals as heroes, society should hold forth people like Deputy Marshal Wells. They are our true heroes.

Dear Obie and family,
My sincere and deepest regards for the loss of your son, Josie. He was sure to follow in your footsteps as a law enforcement officer, and I know you were very proud of him. A big part of your heart has been taken away, but rest assured that it will be replaced by God's loving grace and mercy for I know you are a man of God. I'm sure Josie was a man of peace just as you are along with having a big heart for all good things honorable. Matthew 5:8-10 says, 8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.…" Peace to your family and his wife.
