I first served under Sheriff Nichols. He and his family were wonderful people. The Sunday morning he was shot I was Salem City Judge. Law enforcement officers and officials from across the country honored him the day of his funeral.

I remember this. My grandmother (Helen Wilson), was a friend, was walking with them out of church that morning Next to him when it happened. She was a nurse and preformed CPR until other aid arrived.

We cannot fully honor our heroes of the present without paying tribute to our heroes of the past, Your heroism and service is honored today, the 31st anniversary year of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
