Reflections for Police Officer Tyler Jacob Stewart

God be with you and comfort your family.

Police Officer - -
Mesquite (TX) Police Department

I just saw your father being interviewed on CNN this morning, talking about your death and your cam video. Having served 27 yrs with my agency, watching videos such as yours is hard, its gut wrenching. I cannot fathom what it must have been like for your parents and your father in particular. My prayers go out to your family, your girlfriend and your coworkers. Requiescat in pace my brother.

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Tyler was murdered.

To the Stewart family, fellow officers, and all who call Tyler beloved, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace. I hope that your family knows that a nation mourned for you. As so many of your family members have served as law enforcement officers and you were killed so heartbreakingly young, your horrific murder must be so painful and devastating for your family.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Officer Stewart gave to his community and the citizens of Arizona, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on December 27, 2014

Rest in peace brother. A true hero has passed but will never be forgotten.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The officer stood and faced God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now Policeman, How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?"

The Policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't. Because those of us who carry badges, we can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I've been violent, because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep... Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place, among the people here. They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne, where the saints had often trod. As the Policeman waited quietly, for the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman, You've borne your burdens well. Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets; you’ve done your time in Hell."

What a year this will be, if we could have NO names on this ODMP site.

We'll never get that wish of an empty list, but it's a damn good wish in my opinion.

I'm sorry this is happening, that it couldn't be prevented. It might be selfish, but I just keep replaying in my mind what a notification of my own family would be like if it all went bad on a call-out.
