A portion of a letter written by President Abraham Lincoln, printed in the Boston Evening Transcript on November 25, 1864.

“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic (they) died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln”

Today is sad day to me to have worked along side Former School Safety Agent and now Police Officer Ramos. To have helped him live his dream to only become one of New Yorks Finest. My deepest condolences to his wife and children. His joy for life and his wanting to become a police officer brought a smile to my face to see one of my own fellow brothers to move up and do what he loved. RIP

A police officer should be remembered not by how he died, but how he lived! A great man has gone to secure a safe path for the rest of us to follow. Thank you to you, your family and the New York City Police Department. Our country is a little less safe without you. Rest in Peace Brother!
