"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

To my Brother whom I never had the honor of meeting. I was saddened to hear of your sacrifice, you were so young; an entire career and a life still to live. Like so many other young men and women, you died in service to your Country. But unlike so many young military service members who die in far off lands, you died in service to Americans on American soil. I served with your brothers and sisters of the Ingham County Sheriff's Office for nearly 16 years. Sadly, I departed before we could have met. Speaking to our mutual friends, I hear you were a tremendous young man with a bright future at the Sheriff's Office. For every Fallen Officer, they eventually fill the position. From what I hear, although they will fill your position, you could never be replaced. Your fellow officers and supervisors speak very highly of you, your family should be proud of the impact your service made in such a short time. I also pray that your family is at peace knowing you passed doing what you love. May your family know too, that God loves Policemen and you now sit at his side. In honor to your service and sacrifice to the County and State which I love, I have worn my mourning band on my badge since your passing out here in Arizona. (your Brother and a former Sergeant with the Ingham County Sheriff's Office)

Grant was one of the most enjoyable young men I worked with at Wags to Whiskers in Chelsea. I was so please that he found his life work and knew that he would be just as great police officer as he was when he worked with me. I heart goes out to his family and friends. He will be in my prayers as will his family.
