Now that Chris has been properly laid to rest I would like to share the experience this has been for me personally over the last several days.

I have no doubt Chris would appreciate these words and I pray they are a source of comfort and encouragement to his family and friends.

I had the honor and privilege of working with Chris as a fellow uniform patrol Deputy Sheriff. I can recall being on a call or 2 with Chris and he always struck me as very professional and dare I say "God Fearing".

I say that to say this. I wish I had got to know him better personally after hearing the words spoken about him on three separate occasions.

First, at the prayer vigil last night. I really took comfort in the words spoken by his pastor. He shared the fact that Chris was a real Christian and family man. The kind of man I strive to be, but often fall short.

Second, at the funeral service this morning. Again, the words spoken and having met his wife and children for the first time, I was again comforted by the fact that Chris was a believer and to hear his pastor share Chris' testimony was icing on the cake I received last night.

Finally, at his graveside service. After the long slow drive from Tallahassee to Monticello in the middle of hundreds of patrol cars people on the streets waving flags. On the overpasses waving flags or simply standing with their hands over their heart in the rain as we slowly drive past them. Miles of blue lights flashing. I was again comforted by the fact that everyone who participated or witnessed this event was given the opportunity to accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior just as Chris had done before he was shot and killed serving the people of this community.

Thanks Chris ! Not only for your service but for being the man I now know and will meet you again in heaven one day brother. Rest easy Chris, your mission on earth is complete, job well done, we will take it from here.

When I learned of Chris' passing, I recalled the first time I met him. I was a Trooper at the time, and I was working a crash on US 90 out by the Auto Museum. It was late, and I had been waiting for a wrecker for what seemed like eternity. Chris stopped to check on me. He told me who his brother was (one of my co-workers), and I remember thinking, this has got to be a pretty good guy. We talked for a little while, and then went our separate ways. I never got to know Chris well, but we ran in to eachother professionally working in the same county. He was a good man, and a good cop.

I hope everyone who is hurting can find peace. Today reminded me that there are people out there, despite everything we read and see, who value service and duty. Stay in the fight. Brotherhood knows no boundaries. Love eachother. Pray. Rest in peace brother.

Responding to a call for assistance is what we do. To lose our life doing what is expected of us is unthinkable. In our hearts we know that dangers await us on any give day, any given call, but we still answer the call of duty. Lord find us favor and put a halt to this senseless killings of dedicated and honorable officers. We as your humble servants can ask no more than this. For Deputy Smith, he is a hero who went above and beyond that call of duty and for this we are truly grateful. God let him take his rightful place beside you forevermore. One final salute to you Deputy Smith.

Deputy Smith,

Rest well in the arms of God.

To Your Family,

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray:

“Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, family and loving, caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name, Amen”

I have lifted you and your family to God every morning for the past three years. Feel those prayers. God is with you; He knows and will ease your pain.

Our faith helps us see beyond the grave.

This is so tragic! My thoughts and condolences to the family and fellow Leon County deputies.

Myself a police dispatcher and a volunteer firefighter, I cannot believe how eerily similar this is to an incident not far from where I live. ( http://www.odmp.org/officer/21671-lieutenant-michael-john-chip-chiapperini )

For Deputy Christopher Smith:

The culprit who lays in wait to ambush law-officers and other public servants demonstrates that evil lurks and that we are fortunate that select individuals choose to be the noble protectors of society and that they should be shown at least a modicum of proud recognition from the public. We regret that our brother Christopher would be next law-officer to be senselessly slain by a depraved and morally bankrupt individual. We are thankful for the assistance of another courageous law-officer stepping-in and stopping further death or mayhem.
We pray for Christopher's family, co-workers, friends and all who care about him. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.
As a retired state trooper and Lake County (FL) deputy sheriff I am proud to render Deputy Christopher Smith, a soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.
