"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I knew and worked with Deputy Valdez (Jesse) for several years, and I am honored to have known him! I will forever remember him as a hard worker who was always extremely excited to lend a helping hand as he worked downtown at I.P.C.

Every time I entered through the "double doors" into the jail, he would get up from what he was doing and would help me out, without hesitation. He constantly had a big smile on his face even though he worked central booking, constantly dealing with everyday criminals and many time us, inconsiderate Deputies.

All he could talk about during our conversations was how and when he was coming out to patrol and that he was ready to make arrests and to serve his community.

When he made patrol, he was always the first to answer a call, would worked it, and then would quickly answer another, without complaining. He took pride in a job where little pride is left and was always the first to take the lead.

Thanks, for watching my back and always being the first to volunteer to be my K-9's and my "Coverman."

He is a true hero and inspiration!

RIP Brother........

On behalf of the Westerville, Ohio Division of Police, our thoughts and prayers are with the immediate family of Deputy Sheriff Jesse Valdez and the extended law enforcement family Harris County, Texas Sheriff's Office. Rest in Peace brother and watch over us.

I fight not for glory or fame, for they are momentary. I fight for those who can't. I fight for Justice. I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden. And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets, For I serve to protect the innocent. It matters not where or when, for evil knows no boundaries. Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny, I will not flee. Justice is my weapon. Faith is my shield. Hope is my armor. Cry not at my passing, for it was my Honor to fight for you. Shed not tears of sorrow, But tears of joy, for now, I stand with God.

This career is so thankless. This career has become so much more dangerous and so much more difficult than the old days, yet there is no shortage of those brave ones waiting anxiously to be that officer who gives the ultimate sacrifice. Many deaths of our Heroes are so senseless that it is hard to comprehend that millions of officers work our streets knowing it may be their last day on earth. Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice. Many prayers for the loved ones of those fallen for you too have payed the ultimate price.

"The Final Inspection"

The Deputy stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now Deputy,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The Deputy squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't, because those
of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes i've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked alot of overtime,
When the bills just got to steep,

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me I've
wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here. They really
never wanted me around except to calm
their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had to much, but if you
don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Deputy waited quietly for the judgement
of his God.....

Step forward now, Deputy, You've borne your
burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heavens streets,
You've done your time in hell.

Deputy Ramon Coven
Pasadena Fire Marshal's Office
