Reflections for Special Agent Bernard H. Menker

Bernard Menker was my Grandfather; however, I never knew him. He was the father of my father. Bernard died when my father, Lee, was only nine months old. As a result of his death, my father and his brothers and one sister were placed in an orphanage because my grandmother could not afford to raise them. My Grandfather and grandmother were childhood sweethearts, growing up one block apart. They attended St. John Nepomuk church at 11th and Lafayette. He would have been proud of how his children turned out - all became fine citizens. I would have loved to have known my Grandfather, sit and talk with him, to know about his life. I joined the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and retired after 20 years of service (1972 to 1992) as a Detective in the Bomb and Arson Section.

Special Agent Menker, you gave your life helping to protect one of America's greatest assets, her railroads. You are a hero.

It's of some comfort to know that the 'man' who murdered you gave up his companions before dying himself. I do not mourn him but I am glad he made some amends before he passed. As for what punishment the other two faced, I only hope it was just in light of your murder.

God Bless and may you forever Rest in Peace, Brother.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 84th anniversary year of your death. I am privileged to be among the first to leave a tribute to you. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered. Rest In Peace.

Phyllis Lasater Loya
