Reflections for Patrol Officer Stephen J. Arkell

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

I sat outside for several minutes. I watched the beautiful sunset, and I listened. What I heard was a clang sound. One I don't like to hear but it allowed some reflection. I must be getting older because I feel more, I care more and I appreciate more. I feel for all those close to Stephen and what they are going through. I mean, I feel it. I have never met him and I am not LE. But I find I care about what is being and is going to be done; for his family and for the future of LE. Lastly, the sun seemed brighter lately. The breeze more comforting, the similes and the laughter of family and friends more savoring. We all hope that the passing of someone will make an impact on ones life and allow them to "stop and smell the roses". Listening to that clang, that eerie clang that only a flag at half mast can make, made me realize something. Stephen has become a part of me too, because he led to me being able to grasp these everyday things with new life. He will live long beyond the day of his is honorable departure through those he knew and those he touched. Rest in pease Stephen. May your family, friends and fellow brothers and sister find peace is this sometimes cruel world.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. There is not a day that goes by that I'm thinking of you. Please know Officer Arkell "What you do is important because you exchange a day of your life for it." You are a true hero and touched so many lives. All I think of is:

"When tomorrow starts without me and I'm not here to see, If the sun should rise and find your eyes filled with tears for me, I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today, while thinking of the many things we didn't get to say. When tomorrow starts without me don't think we're far apart, for every time you think of me I'm right there in your heart."

I called today, just to leave my condolences. So many men and women die each day to protect us and their families are left behind with nothing but memories. Praise God that these fellow officers are like families to each other. I pray that you take care of this wife and these children and never let them forget what their father did so that they could play and walk the streets freely. God bless.

Patrolman Arkell,

Rest well, enjoy the fruits of a life of protecting and serving, in the arms of God.

To Your Family,

Feel His presence as God answers the prayers of many who have fallen to their knees on your behalf. Since the day of my son's death, I have carried every law enforcement officer and their family in my heart.

Every morning I go to my knees. During that time I pray, “Lord, Be with all law enforcement officers. Keep them safe and free from harm. They are Your soldiers on the front line of the battle against evil. If one should fall this day - wrap their family in your loving arms. Surround them with Your angels, loving family, friends, neighbors and caring people to comfort them. Ease their pain. Help them to mourn well. In Jesus' name and for Your Glory, Amen.”

I have lifted you and your family to God every morning for over three years. Feel those prayers. God is with you, He knows and will ease your pain.

Our faith helps us to see beyond the grave.
