For Patrolman Stephen Arkell:

Our duty as officers on patrol includes responding to one of the most dangerous assignments of all - family disputes. While most such incidents require only the arrival of an officer to counsel those involved - without an arrest if possible - yet others reject such efforts and chose to kill those who would help them. Wretchedly and cowardly they create the worst possible scene and then take their own lives - which perhaps should have been their initial endeavor when considering how many innocent people are hurt otherwise.
We regret that our brother Stephen would be the next law-officer to join the ranks of too many who have forfeited their lives in the same manner - exceptional heroes, each of them.
We pray for Stephen's family, friends, co-workers, and all who care about them. May they be ready to reach-out to one another in the days ahead.
We are proud to render Patrolman Stephen Arkell, an especially brave soldier-of-the-law, a final salute.

Cpl. Ralph D. Fiorenza (Ret.)
Pennsylvania State Police

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

Abraham Lincoln
