A portion of a letter from the pen of President Abraham Lincoln, printed in the Boston Evening Transcript on November 25, 1864.

“I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic (he) died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
A. Lincoln”

John,
Though we never met face to face, we talked several times over the phone about your passion for 1911 firearms. I knew you well through the updates and stories that my brother Steve Lindsey always shared with me. You were a near and dear friend to Steve and I know that your friendship will be sorely missed. I wish all the prayers for you and your family and God's speed into the next life. God bless you and thank you for doing everything you did for the citizens of Phoenix.
