I am so sorry to hear of the loss, the murder, of Indianapolis police officer Rod Bradway who lost his life in the performance of duty. The loss of every officer is just as painful to our country, our state, our agency and the law enforcement family as when each one of us started. It is always shocking. I pray for his family and his agency and all law enforcement officers throughout our country. After 33 years of law enforcement service, I am retired now. But my heart is as heavy with this horrible news as it ever has been. God bless Rod Bradway.

Often police officers are referred to as the shepherd dog; due to our unwavering courage, strength and fortitude to guard our flock of sheep. You were all these and more; and when the moment came you did not hesitate to fulfill your duty Rod. As the Lord says in John 10:11, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

By laying down your life to protect another, you ultimately laid down your life to protect your partners in blue. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.” (I John 3:16).

In paradisum deducant te Angeli; in tuo adventu suscipiant te martyres, et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Ierusalem. Chorus angelorum te suscipiat, et cum Lazaro quondam paupere æternam habeas requiem.

“May angels lead you into paradise; upon your arrival, may the martyrs receive you and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem. May the ranks of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”

Thank you brother.

To the family of this brave officer: I am deeply sorry for your loss. I know that it keeps my wife up at night wondering if I am okay. I am sorry that you had to lose a husband and a father to a part of society; to an individual, that disgraces humanity. Know that there are people praying for you and thinking about your family.

Although we never met your bravery is one that inspires us in our criminal justice paths. It is a selfless act to decide to wear the badge with honor as you did. You may no longer be among one of our living heroes, but you will forever be in our thoughts. You corageously did what few can do. We think of you with respect and know it takes a strong person to be in the criminal justice field. You will live forever in those who knew your story and find inspiration in all you did. May you rest in peace and thank you for your service.

Officer Bradway was a man I didn't know and I regret that. He is, as proven by his actions, a true hero. Saving people was not new to Officer Bradway, he was a decorated officer who didn't think twice about responding when he heard the shouts for help on that terrible night. He put his own life on the line and paid the ultimate sacrifice so that another may live. May God bless you Sir, may he bless and comfort your family; in blood and in blue & brown.

I knew and worked with Rod for five years on Northwest District Late shift of IMPD. I was the scene of his murder only a few minutes after it happened. He was a hero. He will be missed.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."
