I have laid down my life in service to all of you.
I have been a part of the fabric that has held the line between your safety and your victimization. I have given my life so that others may live in peace. I have lived my life as a dedicated member of the greatest profession. There is no greater honor.

As I now become a part of the rich history of law enforcement, please remember me always for I have left behind those who loved and depended upon me.
My partners and my agency, please remember my family, their loss, and don’t let time soften your compassion for them.

You guard the gate now and I will continue my watch from above.

MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND MAY YOUR FAMILY FIND COMFORT IN THE GOOD YOU HAVE DONE HERE ON EARTH.

Steve, January 21, 1996. Myself along with a number of other new Trainees were standing on the steps at the USBP Sector HQ in SD CA waiting nervously to be allowed into the building for our first day of processing. I saw you drive into the parking lot in your Powder Blue Honda Civic. You were wearing a suit and tie and I thought you were somebody important. ha....but when you came up the stairs you had that bewildered, unsure look in your eyes like the rest of us had. So I knew then you were one of us. After that it was all she wrote. We all conquered FLETC together as USBP Class 298, then you and me headed to our first duty station of ECJ SD together. We stayed at ECJ in the Border Patrol for 1 year together, then headed back to FLETC to continue our law enforcement careers via two different paths. I arrrived at FLETC a few days after you had already been there. The FLETC summer humidity slammed me hard on my first day of PT and by 1800 that night i was whipped. Besides that, I had lost some luggage on the trip from SD to FLETC. I called you from my room and whined about how pathetic i was and you brought me cold gator-aid and a pair of your dress shoes. That was the typical you my brother. You looked out for me always, like now WE will look out for your family. The Lord has called a warrior back home. Thanks my 298 brother! I miss you.

Stephen will be greatly missed by all who knew him. I would like to tell my cousin Mrs. Shaw that we love you, and we are all here for you. You have to be strong for both ur baby girl & baby boy. I know its hard to not miss Stephen... he was such a wonderful person and the greatest husband & father. His only motive was to make you & your kids happy and proud, and I know he did. Be strong and know that you not only have your families support but also those who have loss a loved one support as well. I would like to thank everyone for your kind words and prayers for my cousins husband and my most sincere sympathy to the other Agents family as well. You will both always be remembered & never forgotten. RIP & God Bless You.

Words cannot express the deep sense of loss both of these families have experienced. I pray that they are comforted by knowing that these two men were greatly appreciated for the jobs they undertook in the service of this nation and its citizens. It takes very special people to volunteer their careers and lives to make this nation a better place for all. My condolences to both the Lorek and Shaw families and to the FBI family for the loss of these two outstanding individuals.
