Jim, it has been one week since I got that phone call. I couldn't sleep that night. I can't sleep this night. I'm remembering you for all those good times we had. We were all joking about the time you got the "450" call. You were laughing so hard you had tears in your eyes. I wish we could all go back to that day again. It won't be the same without you buddy. You are forever in our hearts. Watch over us as we continue our mission. We were proud to have you on Team 19.

Illinois State Police D15

I have laid down my life in service to all of you.
I have been a part of the fabric that has held the line between your safety and your victimization. I have given my life so that others may live in peace. I have lived my life as a dedicated member of the greatest profession. There is no greater honor.

As I now become a part of the rich history of law enforcement, please remember me always for I have left behind those who loved and depended upon me.
My partners and my agency, please remember my family, their loss, and don’t let time soften your compassion for them.

You guard the gate now and I will continue my watch from above.

MAY YOU REST IN PEACE AND MAY YOUR FAMILY FIND COMFORT IN THE GOOD YOU HAVE DONE HERE ON EARTH.

Though I never knew him, he was part of my Law Enforcement family and I will mourn this deep loss the rest of my life. My heart aches with all the losses we have suffered, and continue to suffer, through the years. God is our only peace through such times. May family & friends feel the presence of the "God of All Comfort" as they endure the distressing days ahead. I join them in their agonizing grief & remember them in my prayers.

I am the proud Uncle of Trooper James Sauter, and word's cannot adequately express the sincere appreciation of our entire family to everyone that has expressed their kind sentiments on this wonderful website. Thank you very much, you have given comfort and peace to all of us.

It has been amazing to see the overwhelming support of the entire law enforcement community from around the United States after the tragic accident that took my nephew's life while he was on duty last Thursday, March 28, 2013. In particular, the Illinois State Police have been truly remarkable in their care, support and assistance with every detail while looking after Jimmy's loving wife Elizabeth, and Jimmy and Liz's parents and extended family members. From Illinois State Police Director, Hiram Grau; to Jimmy's commanding officer, Commander Joe Perez to all the wonderful troopers that served as Jim's honor guard, the Chaplain's, and all the officers of District 15 and the neighboring Districts--- it is impossible to sufficiently thank all of them for everything that was done for our family. May God Bless all of you for your kind deeds, decency and the loving compassion you provided to our family.

One Illinois State Police officer in particular, Lt. Mark Karczewski has served as our family's Guardian Angel, quite frankly in our eyes he is a Saint. For as long as we live, we will never forget everything that he did to support our family and honor Jimmy's memory during this difficult time. There is a special place in heaven for this wonderful trooper and all of those that assisted us. Thank you Lt. Karczewski and all the wonderful men and women of the Illinois State Police.

We were told that troopers from all 50 states attended the Memorial Services and paid their respects to my nephew. We wish we could have thanked each of them personally, we hope they understand how much we were honored by their presence. We were also blessed with the support of officers and firemen from police and fire departments from across the State of Illinois; so many we could not possibly list them all. Thanks to each of them for attending the services and for paying their respects to Jimmy. The Bagpipers and Drummers of the Emerald Society of the Chicago Police Department also deserve our sincere gratitude for the wonderful and traditional role they played in the services.

Our family is grateful, thankful and appreciates the kindness of the staff and congregation of the Moraine Valley Church of Palos Heights, IL. They allowed our family the use of their beautiful house of worship to accommodate Jimmy's visitation and memorial services. Their support and hospitality to our family and the Illinois State Police was remarkable. They were outstanding in every fashion.

Thanks also to Pastor Bill Sheridan, and Pastor Scott Bradley for their comforting remarks and wonderful memories they shared during Jim's Memorial Service.

It is a tragedy and a terrible loss whenever any law enforcement officer or firefighter dies in the line of duty. We will always remember our beloved family member and our hero Trooper James Sauter. He was a wonderful young man that was committed to serve his fellow man as a proud trooper of the Illinois State Police. We will never forget him. Please know how much we appreciate the many acts of compassion and kindness that so many of you have provided to our family. I can tell you first hand that the loving and considerate manner in which the law enforcement community looks after the families of the fallen is sincerely appreciated, is meaningful and will never be forgotten.

May God Bless all of you and Trooper James Sauter.

Sincerely,

Robert Curran

Rest in peace my brother. Although I do not know you I know of your sacrifice and your call to duty. It takes a special breed of person to put on the uniform and risk our lives for the sake of others. My brother, I know you will be standing post in the kingdom of our father God. Blessings to your family. I will pray for healing and strength. May God bless you all and continue to shine His love and light upon you. Know that because your loved one is gone he died doing something that he loved, a job that brings honor upon his name and his families name.

Your family lived across the street from my grandma’s for a long time. I remember your dad with his race cars and you riding your bike in your driveway when you were little. Thank you for your service Trooper Sauter. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family and co-workers.
