Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Detective Jeremiah Alan MacKay

To the family and friends of Deputy MacKay and his felloiw deputies:

On behalf of my family, I extend our sincerest condolences on the grievous loss you suffered when Jeremiah was killed. Although I am a frequent poster on this site, leaving a reflection for Jeremiah and the other heroes killed during the attack on our law enforcement in California has been difficult because it has been so hard to comprehend someone who once wore the badge dishonoring it by targeting others who honored it.

To Deputy MacKay's family, my heart goes out to all of you and may you find comfort in your loved ones and your strength in your faith. When my son was killed, the entire law enforcement community in our area embraced us in a circle of love and support, and I know you will receive the same support. It makes the unbearable less torturous, and I pray for your solace.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Deputy Jeremiah MacKay gave to his community and the citizens of California, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 12, 2013.

J,
You were taken from us way too soon brother. I will always remember your upbeat attitude and smile. It was awesome to see you as a young Deputy on training, eager to fight crime, develop into a great investigator. Thanks for having my back when we worked together. It was a pleasure working with you and getting to know you as a friend. May God bless you and your family. Rest in peace my brother.

“The Final Inspection”

The Deputy stood and faced his God, which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now, Deputy, how shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church have you been true?

The Deputy squared his shoulders and said “No, Lord, I guess I ain’t,
Because those of us who carry badges, can’t always be a saint”.

I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I’ve been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny, that wasn’t mine to keep…
Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got just to steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears.

I know I don’t deserve a place, among the people here.
They never wanted me around, except to calm their fear.

If you’ve a place for me, Lord it needn’t be grand.
I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t…. I’ll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne, where the saints had often trod.
As the Deputy waited quietly, for the judgment of his God.

Step forward now, Deputy, you’ve borne your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell.

Deputy P. Zieseniss
Box Elder County Sheriff's Office, Utah
