God looked down , from on high, and said " I know what I will do, I will send down ANGELS, to watch my people, I'll dress them in RED and BLUE !!" Deputy Anthony Rakes was one of those ANGELS, dressed in BLUE..REMEMBER, we can NEVER pay an officer, fireman, or soldier, their TRUE worth!

Rest in Peace and thank you for your service. As a former Deputy Sheriff in Livingston County, KY; I worked midnight shifts in rural areas for several years. I know well the dangers of traffic stops at night when patrolling alone. To the family of Deputy Rakes and the Marion County Sheriff's Dept. You have my deepest condolence. You are in my prayers. God Bless You.

We all knew something like this could happen on any stop, especially at 2 or 3 AM. Most all of us did the job because we wanted to, and loved it more than most anything else we could have been doing. Sure, it was dangerous, but it was rewarding too. My condolences to Deputy rakes family, his friends and neighbors, and to his fellow officers.
May God have mercy on Deputy Rakes soul. I'd like to visit with him in heaven some day! Maybe we'll be on patrol together there.

M/TPR Robert F. Cruise, Sr
Virginia State Police

November 15, 2012

My condolences to Deputy Rakes family, friends, and fellow officers. How many times did I make exactly the same kind of stop at 2 or 3 AM and survive unscathed by the grace of God. Police work is dangerous, and we all knew that when we started, but we did it anyway becaused it was in our blood. Deputy Rakes blood has been shed in the line of duty, and I feel like a small part of me has gone with him. May the Lord have mercy on his soul,

M/TPR Robert F. Cruise, Sr

Deputy Rakes....May God keep your soul in peace and love. To the family and department may God ease your pain and replace it with the memories of happier days and times of your cherished brother.

The Thin Blue Line is now one less, but we will close ranks, swallow our pain, and more forward while never forgetting Deputy Rakes and the valiant life he lead.

Peace and Safety to my brothers and sisters.
