This year (2013) I will be riding in honor of Deputy Sheriff Emma Benson. Each year I ride a bicycle 250 miles in an event known as Law Enforcement United "Road to Hope". We honor the fallen law enforcement officers from past years. This year I will have the privilege to carry her name on an engraved wristband which I will wear each mile.

We ride from Virginia Beach to Washington D.C. over a three day trek. I will stand at the Law Enforcement Memorial wall on May 13, 2013 (Candlelight Vigil) in Washington D.C. with pride in my heart as her name is read aloud. Deputy Benson is praised for her outstanding service to the Los Angeles County. As a fellow law enforcement officer, I say Thanks.

Always Remembered and Never Forgotten!

Deputy Benson entered the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department in 1918 after a successful career as a singer in musical theater. She was the sister-in-law of Sheriff John Cline, but entered the Department after successfully completing the civil service exam.

She was assigned as a transportation deputy and her partners Deputy Guard had been assigned as the Department chauffer since 1908. Another Deputy Maurice Reyes was in the rear seat of the car when it was struck.

The Model T was open and exposed to the elements. It was a rainy afternoon and the trolley crossing was elevated and Deputy Guard's view was obscured by the elements and layout of the crossing's design.

Deputy Benson is the first female deputy sheriff killed in the line of duty in the United States.

Thank You Ma'am for your Service! I may be wrong but from my research it looks like you were the first Female officer to fall in the line of duty! Again Ma'am thank you for your service!
