In the simple performance of duty,
he pinned on a badge,
checked his gear with a practiced eye,
and kissed his loved ones good-bye.

In the simple performance of duty,
he reported for work,
joked with his buddies at roll call,
and made his last trip down the squad room hall.

In the simple performance of duty,
he answered the call
to help the helpless, to find the lost,
no matter the danger or how great the cost.

In the simple performance of duty,
he laid down his life,
for those in peril he tried to save,
our brave friend went to his grave.

In the simple performance of duty,
we honor his deed,
as we carry him to rest in a flag-drapped casket,
long after the world has forgotten, we shall never forget.

Never judge or regret, what he did,
In the simple performance of duty.

What can I really tell you all about Chris that you already don’t know?
We are all here because Chris meant something special to each one of us and touched each one of our lives in a very special way.
Chris was very many things and words just can’t encompass the totality of his character.
He was a model son to his parents and always had time to make them an important part of his life.
He was a dedicated husband who worshipped the ground his wife walked on.
Chris was a devoted and attentive father, proud and glowing with love for the son he waited his whole life for, egger for his son to grow and to share with him the things in life that brought him so much joy.
Chris was a man possessing the highest morals. Honest and kind. Trustworthy to the extreme. Kind and forgiving and so willing to give his friendship to anyone who reached out for it. I said quit often, that if someone had a problem with Chris, the problem was theirs because Chris sought issues with no one.
So what can I tell you all about Chris that you don’t already know?
I can tell you what he was to me.
Chris was the only constant in my life. As a matter of fact, I cannot remember a time in my life when he was not a part of it. From the days of sliding down the steps on his mattress, playing war and loosing ourselves in the woods for hours, getting 2am calls from England from a home sick Marine (uncle Jeff, I believe you got those calls as well?), to just last week drinking wild turkey around a camp fire and dreaming of buying a boat together and taking the boys fishing.
To say that Chris was my best friend is a discredit to our relationship. He was, in every sense of the word my brother. The only brother I truly had. Through all the crazy phases and stages in my life Chris never judge me, he never criticized me, he never turned his back on me, not once. He offered me support and defense when anybody else would have said “drop that bum”, He was there, always. He loved me for who I was and never expected or asked me to be anything different.
And I think that it is important to remember that although Chris is gone, so long as there are people in this world who loved him, and remember all the wonderful things he brought to our lives, he will live on in all of us.

Retired Sgt. Vince Macrino
Brother and Best Friend
