I was only two blocks away from this incident as a young man in a pickup basketball game. The courage of both Ray and Terry will never be forgotten. Their actions that day, I believe saved the lives of others nearby. I was a friend of Terry's family and will never forget their sacrifices. I felt for the family for many years, (they are much stronger than i am) and thank them for their services. Ill never forget that day and remember it like yesterday. God Bless you all.

My faithful servant.
You were called upon to serve others.
You were asked to see, what no man should ever have to see.
To go through, what no man should ever have to go through.
But you did so with pride, honor, and integrity.

My faithful servant.
You were called upon to defend those, who could not defend themselves.
To provide justice to those, who did not respect it.
To lay down your life, if the time called for it.
Again, you did not question what was asked of you.
You did it with love, compassion, and loyalty.

My faithful servant.
In times of adversity, you prayed for strength.
In times of triumph, you praised your Lord.
You served your Country, State, and city proud.
Your service will forever be remembered by the many lives you’ve touched.

My faithful servant.
When your service on this earth is finally complete.
I will welcome you home with open arms.
I will embrace you and proclaim,
“Well done thou good and faithful servant.”

RIP my brother, the Lord has taken you home.

I only met Ray once, which was at a horror convention in 1988 or 89. It celebrated the author Stephen King and was held at the hotel that King's novel "The Shining" took place in Colorado.

I had no idea Ray was a police officer as he kept me in stitches all weekend with his hysterical sense of humor and wit. He had written a parody of a horror story called "The Tumor from Arapahoe County" that he read live on stage and had everyone rolling in the aisles and it received thunderous applause, especially when he'd cock one eyebrow and repeat the title throughout his performance...."The TUMOR..........fromarapahoecounty!"

We swapped addresses and Ray sent me several xeroxed fanzines that he had written that were also parodies of King stories and such. They were all silly and filled with jokes that you would roll your eyes over and just groan, but you laughed all the same.

I was stunned by Ray's loss as he was the last person that I thought of as someone who so selflessly protected others. He never spoke of his career with me as I feel he didn't need to brag. Ray was just Ray and he brought so much laughter into my life. He was a joy to know and I wish I had known him better. I have a photo of us and Ray has on a pair of crazy goggles that had "hypno" eyes printed on them and a big ol' grin. That was Ray!

I was only around Ray for one weekend twenty years ago, but I still think of him now and smile.

I can truly say that this world is a better place for having had Ray in it.

RAY'S REFLECTION: Ray recognized the fact that he volunteered to serve with the elite of the elite. The Police Warriors. As a Warrior, he always strove to uphold the prestige, and honor of his calling. Gallantly, he humbly showed the community that he was specially selected and well trained soldier. Ray's courtesy to superior officers and care of his equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Above all, Ray reachedhis objective with honor!

Ray had uncomparable pride in his Police Dept,. Section and himself. And Ray's spoke loudly that he would never fail his comrade's. And he always shouldered more than his share, working as "one entitiy" with his brother's & sister's - right till the end! God Bless you Ray - you have set the "Ultimate Example" of a man and a Warrior.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Ray fit the "Mold" of a great man who just happened to be a Policeman! He was a wonderful husband & father of two -- who should not have died at the hands of a coward -- He is with GOD serving faithfully!
