Wally, I don't know where to start. Your death is especially hard because I knew you on so many levels. As the deputy that did a fine job handling a case involving my children, as a mentor and coworker, as a Brother in Law and most importantly, as a friend. What can I say, I never hesitated to put my life in your hands and I hope that feeling was mutual. You and I have been in some scary situations together but I never had to worry about watching my back if you were there. This pain is horrible and is amplified by the fact that there are no answers to my questions. You need not worry about your wife and children, you know they are taken care of by many who will not let them come to harm. I just wish everyone could have known you and seen first hand what a good friend you are. I will not forget you Bro and til we meet again, we will all carry on with the good fight.

"The Final Inspection"
The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.
There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

We were honored to be able to have Mike as our neighbor and friend. I will never forget the many conversations we had in my yard or his, and I appreciated his advice and friendship. Although we were only neighbors for a short time, I will never forget him and the impact he had on my life. Mike, just want you to know what a great guy you are and what a difference you made to the people of Charles City. Rest in peace, until we see you again.
